Maybe they just never heard of the guy, or it isn't as much in common usage as in the US.
As much as I think there's a dangerous level of anti-Americanism in Europe, I can't figure
any way to see this in that light....
Strangely enough, there are places in the world where American catchphrases are not well-known. *snort* FWIW, I have no clue who Rube Goldberg is, either. I gather that he's an American, and has/had some association with excessively baroque and complicated mechanisms, but I know no more than that about him, and that much I figured out from context.
